The following infographic courtesy of The Raptor Center shows how you can help owls from your own home. It applies to many bird species (not only raptors) and extends to the health of the broader environment.

Cap Chimneys
Animals that nest in cavities, like barred owls, often get trapped in uncapped chimneys.
Keep Cats Inside
Cats kill birds, reptiles & mammals when left outside.
Plan Your Tree Work
Leave up dead trees where possible and do tree work in the fall (after birds leave the nest but before owls nest in winter)
Plant Natives
Native plants help the entire ecosystem, from the smallest insect to the largest raptor!
Stop Window Strikes
Decals, blinds, curtains or tints can be added to problem windows to reduce bird strikes.
Avoid Harmful Chemicals
Pesticides, herbicides, and rodenticides find their way into the entire ecosystem and make their way up the food chain, harming wildlife like raptors.
Take Down Sports Nets
Nocturnal animals like owls often get tangled in soccer, volleyball, and other netting, seriously injuring themselves. Take them down when not in use.
Invite Wildlife In
Install nest boxes or leave undisturbed habitat for species that need help in your area.

Even More Ways to Help Owls
✅ Educate others about safe pest control methods.
⚠️ Stop the use of anticoagulent rodent poisons.

⚠️ Stop the use of glue traps.
✅ Report nesting owls at databases such as iNaturalist.org and eBird.org.
⚠️ Replace barbed wire fences.
✅ Let your lawns grow! (Mowed grass doesn’t support the species owls prey on).
⚠️ Be careful with garden nets (owls get trapped in them).
Netting holes should be small enough that you can’t get your pinky through.
✅ Give owls space.
⚠️ Don’t give owls food or water.
✅ Observe young owls on the ground to make sure they need help before intervening.
⚠️ Report people who are harming or selling owls.
✅ Drive extra carefully at dawn and dusk.
⚠️ Avoid using artificial lights after dark.
✅ Protect old growth forests and protect habitat.
⚠️ Keep drones away from owls.
✅ Support and donate to owl research and conservation.
