A Ruru Morepork in close-up is wrapped in a fresh straw-yellow towel, with wide golden mustard eyes. The owl's plumage is mostly chocolate brown with tan on the forehead, and gingery caramel around the chin like dried out pine needles. There's white feathers around the eyes which together with the pale olive grey beak form a Y shape, edged with rictal bristles like wayward eyelashes. At this distance, the irises are stippled with fine dark dots, and you can practically make out the model, wattage and extended warranty of the tube lights reflected in each pupil. A highly photogenic owl.

Pictured is Ururangi the ruru, who came into our care yesterday after narrowly escaping becoming a cat’s snack. A huge thank you to my sister, Nicola, for bringing him to us.
