The fine white feathers around his face have natural crevices, forming a V shape from the inside corner of each eye and converging at the tip of his pinkish-white beak. It's like a lowercase q and p were conjoined at the tail, and angling towards 11 and 1 o'clock. He appears wise, draped in a sage towel as if posing for a royal portrait.

Initial rescue 28 Sep 2023

Another seriously underweight Eastern Barn Owl. Willy, Barn Owl number 10 from Williamstown. Willy is up and standing this morning. He has made it through the night with supportive care. Fingers crossed for this lovely Owl. The first 48 hours is the critical time to see him pull through.

Update on Willy… He is now hydrated and eating solid food. Yay Willy….

His feathers are white, except for a blond-to-brown band in a heart shape surrounding his facial disk. He also has some mottled woody camouflage across the top of his head, and some speckles of grey and brown on his chest. Talons emerge from bottom of frame, outstretched with bumpy brown grip on the underside of his feet. A human thumb also appears, presumably belonging to the person behind wearing a dark grey top. Various enclosures appear in the background, and a ceiling light is reflected in the one of the owl's black eyes. The owl looks calm, but it probably isn't. Have you heard these things? Sheesh.

Look whooo decided to pop by at Craigieburn Library! This poor thing was being chased by crows and flew straight into the workroom glass at Craigieburn Library! Sandra, Library Officer, promptly collected them, made them safe, and popped them in a box, whilst calling Wildlife Rescuers to see where to take them. She delivered them to a carer on her way home

UPDATE:

The owl has recovered well and is eating mice happily. They will be moved into a big aviary and then released at night back in Craigieburn.

The rehabilitator wears a khaki uniform, and holds the bundle of towel with their bare fingers. The owl has mostly white feathers except for a heart-shaped band around his facial disc that appears charred on the edges (no fire, it only looks that way), as well as a coat of dark ashy patterning at the top of his head which fades to a collar of speckles around his neck.

Meet our newest Barn Owl patient, Count Dracula πŸ§›

Count Dracula was brought to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital after being found in the surf πŸ₯

He was water soaked, had blood in his mouth and had bruising on his eyelids.

He is currently in rehab under the careful watch of our vet team whilst he recovers. Once he’s healthy and strong enough, he will be released back into the wild πŸƒ

Healesville Sanctuary will soon be home to a Raptor Rehabilitation Centre which will be dedicated to injured native birds following a $1.8 million funding announcement from the State Government.

The RRC will provide a safe, peaceful environment for birds to build up their flight fitness, so that they not only survive, but thrive once returned to their wild home.

Flight fitness is an essential part of the rehabilitation process for raptors, as they need to be able to catch their prey mid-air and swoop down onto the ground.

Healesville Sanctuary Director Ross Williamson said to be able to return wildlife to its home is something special.

β€œThe Raptor Rehabilitation Centre will allow the team at Healesville Sanctuary to better provide a second chance for injured raptors so they can soar once more,” Mr Williamson said.

Sixty-three raptors received treatment at Healesville Sanctuary’s Australian Wildlife Health Centre (AWHC) during the past financial year, using a temporary flight tunnel to help with rehabilitation. Road trauma related injuries are the most common presentation.
