We picked up a nestling barred owl a couple of days ago after it was found on the ground in West Olympia. We looked around for a nest or parents, but didn’t see any other owl activity. Fortunately, the owlet is healthy and eating well. Since it’s important to raise young birds with others of their species for proper socialization, we will be sending the owlet to West Sound Wildlife Shelter this weekend to join their single owlet.

You might be wondering: why do we swaddle them like little owl burritos? The answer is simple—it’s to weigh them, medicate them, and ensure they get the nutrition they need!

When owls are debilitated, they’re often too weak to feed themselves. That’s where we step in, providing supportive care with meds, fluids, and hand-feeding until they regain their strength. [This owl] is one of our current patients who just got their final dose of antiparisitic medication (after battling a nasty roundworm infestation!) and—drumroll, please—self-fed for the first time today! 🎉 Big gains!

Back again for #WildlifeWednesday, we want to take a “closer look” at our owl friends, specifically their impressive eyesight!

As you can see from this Barred Owl, who has recently been released, owl eyes are incredibly distinct, typically varying between gorgeous shades of yellow and brown depending on the species. While they are certainly mesmerizing, the large eyes also play an integral part in making owls such skilled hunters. Like humans, these beauties have what is called binocular vision, which gives them depth perception! Unlike humans, however, owl eyes have an exceptional ability to notice slight movement in the dark.

These capabilities combined make owls masters of detecting rodents scurrying along the ground, even from their perches high in the trees. There’s no hiding from these winged wonders!

“When the barbs catch on a piece of skin, the animal fights to get away, often tangling the wing and feathers further or even breaking bones. If the finder were to pull the animal off the barbed wire (something we see frequently), the skin would have been too severely damaged to attempt treatment. Luckily, this finder called for help and removed the animal properly so that we could provide care.

Wearing thick leather gloves, bundle the bird in the towel and cut the fencing on both sides to free the bird with the wire still attached to their wing/body.
“This owl required surgery to cover exposed muscle and tendons torn open by the sharp barbs on the barbed wire fence. Thankfully, the finders did exactly as they were supposed to – they cut either side of the fence to free the owl, and did NOT try to “rip” the owl off the fence themselves. This allowed us to carefully remove the wire under anesthesia with minimal additional damage to the surrounding tissues.

“This bird has recovered well and the wound is looking beautiful, with feathers beginning to grow back in. They’ve been moved to one of our outdoor flight enclosures to start working on flight conditioning, and hopefully will be released in the coming weeks!”
