We picked up a nestling barred owl a couple of days ago after it was found on the ground in West Olympia. We looked around for a nest or parents, but didn’t see any other owl activity. Fortunately, the owlet is healthy and eating well. Since it’s important to raise young birds with others of their species for proper socialization, we will be sending the owlet to West Sound Wildlife Shelter this weekend to join their single owlet.

This is a short-eared owl. He weighs 310 grams-so not very big. A female might weigh up to 500 grams. His name refers to two small feather tufts on the top of the head. This cute guy was caught in a barbed-wire fence and tore a large portion of his right wing open. Dr. Ginny Johnson was able to surgically suture soft tissue back together. We did it right here at our facilities new surgical suite. Your donation dollars at work! We put a new anesthesia machine, wet table, and surgical light to use. These owls are disappearing all around the country and are endangered in some states. Here, they are a species of great concern. Habitat loss and predation are the main causes. His recovery depends on how well his wounds heal. We are providing expert care and hope he gets to be released!

This poor guy was stuck in netting at a golf course in Renton and the people that found him couldn’t find anywhere to take him. They finally got in touch with a small mammal rescue place in Carnation, Footprints Wildlife. Kathi of Footprints called our Director on her cell phone at home, who then reached our Clinic Manager. Everyone was trying to make it to holiday events, but coordinating everything went smoothly and all had a peaceful night. Most importantly the little owl is now eating well and stable. He has an injured leg and our vet will be seeing him tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who took time that evening to help this adorable little owl.”
