“Our colleagues at Lake Erie Nature and Science Center (@lakeerienature) admitted this young Northern Saw-whet Owl after it was found injured and missing most of it’s flight feathers, possibly as a result of an animal attack. With permission from state officials in Ohio and Pennsylvania, they transferred this petite owl to Tamarack for continued treatment. X-rays show it has a fractured first digit, so it is receiving splinting, medications and physical therapy.

“Northern Saw-whet Owls stand just 7 inches tall, and make a repetitive “toot-toot-toot” call. It is unusual to see these secretive nocturnal birds as they perch in dense conifers. Saw-whets primarily hunt deer mice and a single mouse is two meals for them. They are unusual among owls in that they migrate. A banding project called “Project Owlnet” which began in the 1990s has been adding to our understanding of their movements. Erie Bird Observatory bands migrating Saw-whets each year.”
______

This Eastern Screech Owl came to us earlier this week and is one of the first patients admitted to our updated indoor rehab space! He was sadly clipped by a car and it took a few days for him to get to us. Thankfully the owl is okay other than some missing feathers and an injured eye. His upper eyelid and nictitating membrane (third eyelid) are torn. Thankfully his eyeball itself is mostly unharmed. We were able to clean up his wounds and remove the debris from his eye in short session over the last few days. He is resting comfortably and will see our vet on Sunday to determine the next best steps to help him retain as much vision as possible in the eye.

Last weekend our vets took a look at our Eastern Screech Owl patient… Unfortunately the damage to his eye lid is so significant that even with surgical repair he would not be able to ever close the eye again. The best course of action is to remove the eye. This is the same surgery we did for our other screech owl just a few weeks ago. We are hopeful that this little one will make a full recovery and be released too.

They rely on their hearing as much as (if not more than) their sight, and can keep hunting for prey even without full binocular vision.

He was found near Hummelstown on the ground unable to fly. After admission to the wildlife center, it became clear that the owl had injured his right leg. We don’t know how the injury happened.

We headed to the vet today for x-rays. The Animal Hospital of Dauphin County once again were rockstars fitting us in for an emergency appointment! Thankfully no bones are broken, but the owl’s hip is dislocated. Dislocations in wildlife, especially birds, are not simple to fix. Unfortunately the vet was not able to get the hip back in place. Our hope is that with medications, gentle care, and cage rest the joint will slowly work itself back into place. The owls prognosis with the injury and his overall poor body condition is not great but we will do everything we can to help him heal.

Generous donations from the owls rescuers and their family/friends covered almost his full veterinary bill today! We are so incredibly thankful. All of our supporters make it possible for us to provide the owl with the fluids, medications, liquid emergency diet, caging, and food he will need for a successful rehab.

The great horned owl patient with the dislocated leg is making improvements. He is now putting some weight on the leg and using it more. He still has a long way to go but we are happy with his progress. He’s enjoying all the free food, but not enjoying his medical care so much 😅.
