This Burrowing Owl was pictured shortly before hurricane Milton flooded the wildlife hospital at CROW campus in Sanibel, FL. Animals and personnel had to evacuate and continue triage (!) at a temp site until the causeway reopened and electricity was restored.

Which Great Horned Owl mood are you this morning? This Great Horned Owl (24-1367) was admitted from North Fort Myers after it was found stumbling around the finder’s back yard. Upon admission, the patient was emaciated, but showed no other significant findings. The patient was given pain medication and other supportive care.

Once the patient was stabilized, x-rays revealed a pellet in the Owl’s shoulder which was removed and sterilized while it was under anesthesia. After a few days of supportive care, the Owl responded well to treatments and became much brighter. After 11 days in care, the patient was transferred to @peaceriverwildlife in Punta Gorda for continued care in a large outdoor enclosure!

Update 18 May 2024

Happy Freedom Friday! This freedom Friday is a very special one! Do you remember the Great Horned Owl admitted very thin and radiographs later found a pellet in its shoulder? This is them now! Thanks to the joint effort from our friends @peaceriverwildlife we worked together to get this Owl back out into the wild.

CROW cared for the Owl after it was first found and offered care until it was well enough to be placed in a large outdoor flight enclosure. It was then transferred to Peace River Wildlife Center to finish its rehabilitation journey in one of their large outdoor flight enclosures. We are so thankful to these partners for helping us as we continue to rebuild!

Initial care at Boynton Beach, Florida
then relocated to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary – Jupiter, Florida

Picture sent in 24 Jun 2025 with the submission statement:

I work at a small animal general practice & urgent care veterinary hospital in Boynton Beach Florida. Earlier this month, a pair of women going to lunch in the plaza came in stating there was an owl in a random cars front grill in the parking lot. We were able to get him un-stuck and provide him with oxygen, pain meds, and X-rays. His leg was broken, which we splinted, and eye injured. I drove him up to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter Florida and found out he is an Eastern Screech Owl.

“On August 15th, a burrowing owl (23-3177) was admitted to the clinic with a reported injured wing. Upon closer examination, it was determined that the owl had a left wing droop with swelling and bruising of the elbow which was a result of a dislocation of the joint. Thankfully since the injury had occurred recently, veterinarians were able to reduce the wing bones back into a normal position with the joint and a supportive body wrap was placed to immobilize the wing while it heals.

“This owl is receiving anti-inflammatory pain medications and regular physical therapy sessions to help ensure the wing can still stretch out normally so the owl can eventually fly again. Did you know that the feathers along the edge of owls’ wings are specially adapted to allow them to have silent flight and increase their chances of successfully hunting prey? We hope this owl will be able to rejoin its family at the burrow once its injury has fully healed.”

On July 4, this Burrowing Owl (23-2627) was admitted from Cape Coral after it was found unable to fly. Upon examination, the owl had a left wing droop and was thin. Radiographs confirmed the patient had a slightly displaced left coracoid fracture. Some typical wildlife fractures may take several weeks to heal and require stabilization to prevent further injury while in care.

A body wrap was placed to help keep the wing immobile next to the body to heal the fracture. The Burrowing Owl has received physical therapy on the wing to maintain full range of motion. On July 15, the Owl was moved to an outdoor enclosure to begin flight conditioning! The patient continues to be closely monitored by our rehab team on its healing process.

It’s possible this Short-Eared Owl was windswept, in search of food, or just plain lost, but then again SEOWs are known to travel long distances. Whatever the case this one was looking for a place to rest, and so perched itself atop a fishing rod, in this 2023 viral video:

The two fishermen in the video managed to get the owl into a blanket, and later released it back at the Sarasota shore in Florida.

As an aside, this owl’s been doing the rounds online. In a post at r/BeAmazed somebody mentioned r/owlsintowels. This one comment brought 1200 or so new subscribers – so thank you to u/Virtu-92 for the shout out!

“Injured wing, probably from a car. Sometimes when they first arrive in rehab, they don’t eat. We offer food (whole dead mouse or chick). If they decline we offer a few bites with tongs; they’ll usually remember that eating is good.”

It was reported this owl was released back to where it was found.

No clinic was listed, so Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife has been selected as the nominal feature clinic:

Part of monitoring the health of the animals in our care requires us to weigh them frequently so that we know they are not losing weight and that they are on the path to healing. Since our patients won’t always sit still for us we sometimes have to wrap them up so that they’ll stay and more so, so they don’t hurt themselves. Have you ever seen angrier or cuter burritos than these?? 🌯🌯😄❤️

This gray phase eastern screech owl is one of many animals and birds that have been tended to by Jodi Swenson of Gloucester

The owl was found struck by a car in Rockport, was ready for release Tuesday night, just days after the Rockport animal officer presented Swenson with the case.

Swenson wrapped the full-grown owl gingerly in a pink fleece blanket the size of a washcloth earlier Tuesday afternoon. She teased his beak open and slipped a syringe of anti-inflammatory medicine into his mouth, emptying it down his throat.

A small bottle of that medicine, which Swenson said “lasts forever” on small birds but goes quickly on larger birds like seagulls, costs $40. Veterinarians often chip in giving free exams, but Swenson reluctantly admitted she still pays for medication.

The choices Swenson made to care for ill and injured animals at the beginning of her rescue career may be costly and have put a ding in her credit, but have also allowed her to keep going forward, rescuing countless numbers of birds from humming birds, to gannets, to pigeons, along the way.

”I had to choose between bills or saving an animal,” Swenson said. “Guess what I chose.”
