Initial post – 23 Mar 2026

We currently have a sick display bird at the Raptor Refuge and her name is Peaches. Peaches is a very old Tasmanian Masked Owl. She has a little friend to keep her company, Patch. Patch and Peaches have been together for around 10 years now, moving to different aviaries with each other. They’re best friends. For the time being she going to get midnight snacks (and hidden tablets inside them) until she gets better.

Peaches update – 19 April 2026

No two days at the refuge look the same. You never quite know what you’re walking into and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
We were so grateful to have the team from @wildliferecoveryau visit recently. The work they do, and the support they bring, means more than we can say.
And Peaches, our beautiful Peach. She’s been with us for almost as long as the refuge has existed @ziggy_raptorrefuge grew up alongside her. At some point these birds stop being birds in your care and just become… family. Peaches has always been that.

She had a little infection, so it’s almost been three weeks since she’s been on her antibiotics.

Her recovery is going well and we’ll share a proper update soon. 🖤

Peaches update – 19 May 2026

She’s currently got a midday snack and she’s feeling much better. She’s a lot more active at night time. She’s walking around on the perches a lot more. The vet said all issues are gone, so I’m sure she’d be smiling now if she could.

… as always she is a joy to be around 🦅

Rocket has featured here before. Here’s another look at him, recuperating after anaesthesia. He suffered a broken toe, likely from collision with a vehicle, but thankfully Bonorong vets were able to splint the fracture, giving Rocket the best possible chance to regain health.

Check out ‘Rocket’ the little boobook 🚀

Our hearts melted just a little for this one ❤️‍🩹

He was admitted to our wildlife hospital after being discovered at the side of the road by a member of the public.

Upon flight testing, Rocket was flying, perching and resting his wings relatively well.🦉

Our vets anaesthetised Rocket, ran some blood tests and treated a laceration on his foot, which was likely sustained from a car strike.

His radiographs looked positive for the most part, showing only a fracture to one of his toes.

Our vets made a small splint and aligned it precisely over Rocket’s fractured toe, finally bandaging it to hold everything in place.

We have our fingers crossed that he will continue to make good progress over the coming weeks, if so he should be able to return to the wild in the near future for full blast off! 💥
