16th of Owltober!

Wildlife entanglements are an all too common event. When hunting in the dark owls can fail to see the strings of the nets and get caught. I’ve bookmarked far too many owls trapped in garden nets, soccer nets, and in this case, the net of a high school batting cage.

While this owl was lucky to survive unharmed, the outcome is frequently much worse: severe cuts, loss of circulation, broken bones, extreme stress, or starvation, any of which can be fatal.

And it’s so so easy to avoid.

How you can help: Use small-mesh netting birds can see, or take nets down and store them safely when not in use.

And this Owl-o-ween, please refrain from decorations like synthetic spider webs and opt instead for naturally-sourced materials like paper or cloth.

On to the story of this lucky GHOW…

Patient of the Week – Entanglement Rescue – this Great Horned owl was discovered early this morning caught in the netting of a batting cage. Staff at the high school in Lake Stevens reported the situation and our staff arrived to rescue the owl. She was taken to the wildlife hospital to be examined. Fortunately, she was found to be healthy and free of any injuries. She was able to be released late this afternoon back into her territory!

Patient of the Week – Cat Caught Northern Pygmy-owl
He was brought in the house by a cat. Fortunately, there are no serious injuries and he is angry and feisty! He is finishing up a round of antibiotics and we will wait for the snow to subside, then he will be returned to his territory.

“Patient of the Week – Christmas owl – well he is actually a Burrowing owl and arrived on Christmas Eve. This poor guy was stuck in netting at a golf course in Renton and the people that found him couldn’t find anywhere to take him. They finally got in touch with a small mammal rescue place in Carnation, Footprints Wildlife. Kathi of Footprints called our Director on her cell phone at home, who then reached our Clinic Manager. Everyone was trying to make it to holiday events, but coordinating everything went smoothly and all had a peaceful night. Most importantly the little owl is now eating well and stable. He has an injured leg and our vet will be seeing him tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who took time that evening to help this adorable little owl.”

Update 01 Jan 2020:

The Burrowing owl is doing much better. Check out his legs! So adorable and expressive.

Final update 26 Mar 2020:

Remember our Christmas Eve rescue? A Burrowing owl that caught in netting at a golf course – he was a young owl migrating with mom when he was stuck and left behind. We had to over winter him and last week we released him! He was taken to an established breeding area in Benton county. You can see the area and the burrows the federal refuge has in place. He is banded and we hope he has a long life!
